Gene, I think I know what embedded help is -- I think of it as messages or images that appear in the UI as you either progress through a procedure or simply activate a particular control. They appear and disappear depending on what you're doing.
If you think of it as something else, could you elaborate on it? And can you write a little more about the hand-holding automation you speak of? I want to understand this better.

My vote would be for embedded help and other hand-holding automation that walks users step-by-step through procedures. It isn't really all that new; I was writing content for industrial systems that worked like this 10 years ago. But on everyday consumer products it's still probably a "new thing."
