Its not a crime to be overdressed, but showing up in a suit and tie at a company where even the upper managers don't dress that way on a day to day basis may make you seem a little out of place.

I will wear less-casual outfits to attend meetings at client sites; but I can't think of any situation in which a technical writer would be likely represent their company at an executive-level meeting that would require formal business attire.

Business casual -- ie dress shirt/no tie and sports jacket -- should be fine for just about any situation.

I've never gone to any interview without wearing a tie. And I usually wear a suit. It's not a crime to be overdressed.

And when I interviewed others for senior positions at a company in Grass Valley, CA, I was quite shocked when candidates showed up without so much as a sport coat and tie.

Although you're desirous of a technical writing position, you never know when a company might want to send you out as an ambassador. In so doing, the powers that be might want you to wear a suit. Why not demonstrate from the get-go that you're able to represent the company in this manner?
