Add me to the old-school group. I used to despise the Friday "dress-down"
when I was a vendor at Kodak. These were people on a sinking ship dressing
like bums just because it was Friday. And what is the deal with people
wearing shorts and t-shirts to funerals, weddings, graduations, church,
etc.? And I know cleavage is in style, but really...sorry, getting carried
away here :-).

If and only if the recruiter specifies you are NOT to show up wearing a
suit, then don't show up wearing a suit.

I always wear my Sunday suit to important events.

I'm old-school.

I've never gone to any interview without wearing a tie. And I usually wear a
suit. It's not a crime to be overdressed.

And when I interviewed others for senior positions at a company in Grass
Valley, CA, I was quite shocked when candidates showed up without so much as
a sport coat and tie.

Although you're desirous of a technical writing position, you never know
when a company might want to send you out as an ambassador. In so doing, the
powers that be might want you to wear a suit. Why not demonstrate from the
get-go that you're able to represent the company in this manner?
